Portugal’s first ever participation in major football tournaments like FIFA World Cup dates back to 1966. Portugal qualified again in the year 1986 and 2002. In the 1966 FIFA World Cup hosted by England, Portugal made it up to the semi-finals and thus taking the third place by defeating Soviet Union with the score of 2-1. Portuguese team did not displayed any excellence in rest of their attendance until the year 2002 where they became fourth in the FIFA World Cup hosted by Germany. As of January 18, 2018, Portugal football team is third in FIFA ranking.
