Portugal’s first ever participation in major football tournaments like FIFA World Cup dates back to 1966. Portugal qualified again in the year 1986 and 2002. In the 1966 FIFA World Cup hosted by England, Portugal made it up to the semi-finals and thus taking the third place by defeating Soviet Union with the score of 2-1. Portuguese team did not displayed any excellence in rest of their attendance until the year 2002 where they became fourth in the FIFA World Cup hosted by Germany. As of January 18, 2018, Portugal football team is third in FIFA ranking.

Coached by the current head coach Fernando Santos, the Portuguese team has again qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted by Russia. With their captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who holds the record for most caps and goals the Portugal football team has high hopes for doing well in the upcoming 2018 World Cup.
